The inspiration behind Barkin’ Doggie Biscuits

I’m not kidding when I tell you I’m in love with this dog treat!

I ask Annvi to tell me a little about Barkin’ Doggie Biscuits.  I had to know- why dog treats?  What made this choose this particular path?  Why give so much to rescue?

I have to admit, her answer touched me.  I’m putting Annvi’s own words below.

Tobiah and I adopted our first dog in February 2008.   Tobiah had grown up with rescue dogs, but I had never had one nor had I ever wanted a dog. I used to be one of those people who would get bored listening to people’s pet stories and wonder how anyone could be so attached to an animal.   When we got Rocky, I was very unsure about how this would work out.  He was a BARC dog, but this meant nothing to me back then.

Fast forward a few months. I became obsessed with Rocky Roo.  Rocky came with me EVERYWHERE. I found dog friendly restaurants and parks. We took him on vacations. We drove 13 hours to Georgia rather than flying to see my parents because I couldn’t bear to leave him in Houston in a kennel.   I even took him with me to San Antonio when I had to work there for a summer. The thought of losing Rocky literally did and still does brings tears to my eyes.

And then came puppy mills, shelters, and rescue groups.  Rocky’s foster mom told us about the conditions at BARC- how many unwanted pets there were.   We felt overwhelmed with frustration and guilt the more we learned about what was going on in the dog world. How had we not known about all these places? There were so many dogs, beautiful creatures that needed homes. So many that needed to be rescued.  We started volunteering at Weekends at BARC.  The dogs there get very little, if any, play time outside.  Weekends at BARC is a group of volunteers that walk and bathe all the adoptable dogs every Sunday so that they get outside at least once a week.  Our first day there, we ended up with our second pup, Zeus.  J

We realized that there are many people who love their dogs as much as we do, but may not have the time, resources, or avenues to help these unwanted pets, or just may be as unaware as we were.   Barkin’ Doggie Biscuits™ was a result of this.  We hope this brings attention to rescue groups that are saving dogs from high-kill shelters so that the next time someone thinks they are ready for a dog they consider rescuing a dog.

Currently in Houston, we are supporting HAPI, Homeless Animal Partnership Initiative.  HAPI’s focus is to find permanent homes for unwanted animals in Houston. We will be at their next event:

HAPI Family Pet Festival
January 16th from 10am – 4pm
St. Christophers Episcopal Church
